Some wedding days are beautiful, others are sentimental, and a few are just plain legendary. Kathleen and Morgan’s surprise wedding at The Cordelle? It checked all three boxes—and then some.
Their wedding wasn’t just a celebration of love. It was a full-blown surprise operation that took almost a year of careful planning, secret-keeping, and playful deception. Hosted at The Cordelle, one of the most charming venues in Nashville, this surprise wedding unfolded with so much joy, laughter, and personal touches that it deserves its own storybook.
As a Nashville-based wedding photographer, I’ve been lucky enough to witness all kinds of creative wedding days. But this was my first time photographing a full-on surprise wedding, and let me tell you—it’s an experience I will never forget.

Choosing the right venue for a surprise wedding is no small feat. It needed to feel like a chill hangout space—not like a wedding venue—but still be beautiful enough to host an actual ceremony and reception.
Enter: The Cordelle in downtown Nashville.
The Cordelle is one of those rare gems that blends cozy charm with modern design. Its clean lines, neutral palette, and homey feel made it the perfect setting for their plan. To their guests, it looked like a beautiful Nashville backyard gathering. But behind the scenes, it was fully prepped for one unforgettable Nashville Surprise Wedding day.
When Kathleen and Morgan reached out to me almost a year before their wedding date, they pitched their idea with a mischievous sparkle: they were going to tell all their friends and family they were eloping in Italy—but instead, they’d gather them in Nashville for what was supposedly a send-off party, only to reveal that they were actually tying the knot right then and there at their Nashville Surprise Wedding.
It was bold. It was ambitious. And honestly? I wasn’t sure if they could keep it a secret that long.
But they did.
The cover story was so convincing—complete with mentions of passports, travel logistics, and faux elopement details—that not a single person (that I know of) caught on. From the beginning, Kathleen and Morgan were all in. They envisioned a relaxed, joyful day that emphasized what mattered most to them: celebrating their love with the people they cared about most. And they made sure that the day reflected them in every single detail.

From the moment I arrived that afternoon, there was a bubbling excitement in the air. I knew what was coming, and I was doing everything I could to play it cool and capture candid moments without giving anything away.
Kathleen and Morgan greeted each guest in casual outfits, blending in like this was just another low-key party. There were no tell-tale wedding signs, no ceremony setup just yet—just some stylish lawn games, light snacks, and the classic Nashville backdrop.
As I photographed guests mingling and laughing, I could feel the anticipation building. Morgan gave me a quick nod—he was ready. Kathleen was upstairs waiting for the signal. It was time.

The couple gathered their closest friends and family on the lawn. Morgan stood up front with a grin that gave it all away, and then he dropped the news:
“This isn’t just our PRE-wedding celebration…this is our wedding. ”
The crowd absolutely erupted.
Laughter. Gasps. Shouts of “I KNEW IT!” Some guests teared up. Others cheered. It was pure magic.
While everyone was still processing what just happened, Kathleen slipped upstairs with her mom to change into her wedding gown. Morgan ducked into a side room to put on his black tux. And in the meantime, guests were invited to take their places along either side of the lawn, forming a beautiful and organic aisle under the Nashville sky.

Fifteen minutes later, the music began to play. Kathleen emerged, smiling and radiant in her gown, walking down an aisle lined with people who love her, who had no idea they’d be watching her say “I do” just moments ago.
The ceremony was short and heartfelt. They shared handwritten vows, exchanged rings, and sealed it all with a kiss.
No elaborate setup. No months-long schedule of events. Just a couple in love, surrounded by their favorite people, promising forever. And honestly? That’s what weddings are really about.

After the ceremony, the vibe shifted into full-on party mode. And the best part? The entire event stayed true to the casual, joyful energy that Kathleen and Morgan had envisioned.
Dinner was provided by Daddy’s Dogs, a Nashville staple serving up delicious hot dogs with all the toppings. Guests grabbed chips, drinks, and lined up for their late afternoon “wedding dinner.”
Instead of a traditional cocktail hour or formal reception program, guests played cornhole and board games on the lawn. There were temporary tattoo stations, spontaneous dance-offs, and lots of barefoot dancing under the string lights.
And just when everyone thought they had seen it all, Kathleen and Morgan surprised everyone again with a custom T-shirt toss. Think sporting event vibes, but wedding edition. The shirts featured a custom design commemorating their surprise wedding, and people loved it. It was unexpected, playful, and such a fun keepsake.

As a wedding photographer in Nashville, I’ve photographed every kind of celebration—from classic ballroom weddings to mountaintop elopements. But there’s something especially intimate and joyful about surprise weddings.
Without the pressure of months of guest expectations or a rigid timeline, the couple gets to focus on presence over perfection. Kathleen and Morgan’s day wasn’t about checking boxes—it was about being in the moment, with their people, and making memories that felt like them.
Would I photograph another surprise wedding again? In a heartbeat.

If you’re reading this and thinking “Okay… we have to do this,” here are a few tips from a photographer’s perspective:
Look for a space like The Cordelle that can pass as a casual party setting and transition quickly into a ceremony space.
The fewer people who know, the more magical the surprise will be. You’ll need a trustworthy vendor team that’s fully on board (like your photographer, of course!).
Give guests something to do while you and your partner change. Kathleen and Morgan built in a perfect 15-minute intermission and it kept the energy going.
This is your wedding day! Whether you serve hot dogs or pass champagne, toss T-shirts or cut a cake—let the celebration reflect your personality.

Kathleen and Morgan’s surprise wedding was more than just a fun twist—it was a reminder of what really matters.
Love. Laughter. Connection. And doing things your way.
I feel so honored to have been the one to document every unexpected, joy-filled moment. From the reveal to the t-shirt toss, this day will forever be one of my favorite Nashville weddings I’ve ever captured.
